Shantell teaches a variety of classes, and is committed to teaching good, strong, safe technique. She believes in working one-on-one with students, and tailors classes to meet the needs of her clientele. She has taught men, women, and children of all shapes, ages, and sizes.

Classes in Kitchener

Shantell teaches mixed level belly dance technique classes at Impact Movement Studios at 161 King St. W., Second Floor in Kitchener, ON. Classes are ongoing and are $10/class. Classes are Mondays from 6:00-7:00 pm. For more information, call Leanne at (519) 579-1559.

Shantell also teaches floorwork classes at her home studio in downtown Kitchener. It runs Wednesdays from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. Get into shape and spice up your dancing with some serious core-strengthening floor moves. You will work your abs, back, legs, and butt while improving flexibility, balance, and fluidity of movement. Classes are ongoing, taught on a drop-in basis, and are $10 each. For more information, email Shantell.

Class FAQ

What do I wear to class? Wear something comfortable, with stretch to it. Yoga pants, leggings, or shorts are good. A slim-fitting tank top, tshirt, or sports bra is ideal. Slim-fit clothes are best because it makes it easier for the instructor to see if you're maintaining safe and correct posture. A scarf with coins or fringe is optional, but will help you figure out certain movements. You can either go bare-footed, or wear dance slippers (eg. ballet slippers, lyrical sandals, half soles) on your feet. If your feet are often cold, you can wear leg warmers or socks.

Do I have to show my belly? No, you don't have to show your stomach. Plenty of professional performers wear outfits which completely cover their stomachs. But you may find that as you progress, you'll want to see what your stomach is doing during particular movements....

Am I too fat/skinny/old/out-of-shape to dance? No. This is a highly individualized, no-impact form of exercise and expression suitable for all levels of fitness.

Do men dance, too? Yes. This is a folk dance enjoyed around the world by people of all ages, shapes, and genders.

Is belly dance stripping? No. If you knew how long it took to get all dressed up in full costume, you'd know we'd never want to just take it all off in performance!

I'm shy and don't want anyone to see me learning. What can I do? You can have one-on-one classes in the privacy of your home or Shantell's home studio. Rates are listed above.

What is tribal fusion belly dance? It is a North American style of belly dance with roots in Middle Eastern dance, hip hop, yoga, and American Tribal Style belly dance. Tribal fusion tends to be more strength-oriented and earthy than the comparably light and flowing style of classical Egyptian belly dance (raqs sharqi).

What is floorwork? Floorwork is a strength-intensive aspect of belly dance which is done from a kneeling, sitting, or reclining position. When done well, it is both very beautiful and tasteful. Although it was once well-known in both Egypt and North America, in recent decades it has become very rare. It is Shantell's favourite dance style.
