Alif: Love Supreme: "If you want strictly traditional arrangements with exclusively traditional acoustic instruments, don't buy this. If you want a bold yet enchanting fusion of synth harmonies and beautifully played traditional instruments, this is wonderful. I usually dislike synth washes over traditional musics, it is so tacky almost all the time, but not this time, not to my ear. Truly glorious." Canadian funds: Alif: Love Supreme
Crescent Moon. "The electronics are used to enhance rather than drown the acoustic instrumentation, and the only synthesizer-based piece, "Salute to the Sun," is stylistically akin to Middle Eastern vocal music. Also, the CD is nicely balanced between the spiritual, the sensual, and the downright funky (like "Tamzara"). It's a thorough pleasure to listen to, and if you're a dancer it'll have you up and moving within thirty seconds."
Fire Dance. "A thoroughly enchanting and beautiful masterpiece. Beautiful. Inspired. Mystical. You cannot help but feel uplifted and elevated listening to this magnificent CD, as it takes you to a happier and more perfect place. The collaboration of Brian Keane and Omar Faruk Tekbilek is a match made in heaven."
Mystical Garden. "There's a lot of variety, from the raucous"Shaskin" (the zurna, the featured instrument, is typically played at large outdoor events) to the beautiful, flowing "Hasret" (which always compels me to pick up a veil and start improvising), Keane's lovely "Magic of the Evening," and the mystical final piece. The musicians are all terrific -- listen for the kanun player, who's a genius, although I'm also quite taken with the percussion solos. The whole album is highly listenable if you're not a dancer (although I wouldn't call it "background music"; you DO have to pay attention!). And if you're a dancer, don't put it on unless you've got an hour free." Canadian funds: Mystical Garden
Suleyman The Magnificent: Original Soundtrack. "Amazing, wonderful for middle eastern dance. It's good to watch the video for which it is the soundtrack to understand the swirling emotions and destinies of it's characters. I have worn out my tape, I love painting to it and dancing to it."
