"Salimpour's videos go beyond those beginner moves to the isolations and exercises that will improve the viewer's dance. In other words, she doesn't offer the usual hip-twist, chest-lift routine meant for someone who's taken six weeks of belly dance class at the gym. Instead, these videos include drills meant both to exercise those muscles most pertinent to belly dance and to develop mastery of the shimmy and undulation. A beginner might benefit from following along, but this isn't the usual mechanical review of basics."

Bellydance for Beginners with Suhaila: Fitness Fusion Jazz. "This dvd and the whole series are great for working on isolations. This particular workout was the most difficult for me to follow. I'm an intermediate bellydancer and was able to do most of the workouts until she does some combinations towards the end that just got too confusing and she didn't really explain what she was doing. Other than that, she works on the hip isolations which really refine doing the maia (figure 8). This video is challenging yet do-able."
Bellydance for Beginners with Suhaila: Fitness Fusion Pilates. "This dvd and the whole series are great for working on isolations. She works on stomach isolations and glutes in this particular workout. You'll learn how to do stomach rolls properly as well as hips lifts and thrusts. I'm an intermediate bellydance student and it was challenging yet do-able. It's a great workout and my stomach was sore for 3 days after the first time I did the dvd."
Bellydance for Beginners with Suhaila: Fitness Fusion Yoga. "This dvd and the whole series are great for working on isolations and just refining your moves in general. This particular workout and the pilates are my favorites. She works on stomach isolations and glutes. I'm an intermediate bellydancer and was able to do most of the exercises, and others were challenging, but not discouraging. The dvd comes with special features which includes a bonus mini workout, a solo performance, a performance by her entire troupe and circle dance. Her students in the video are very talented and the workout motivates you to get to their level." |
