Pope John XXII

In the 1320s, Pope John XXII "expressed a particular horror of witches and claimed that he feared for his own life at their hands" (Kors & Peters 77). After being advised by several theologians, John XXII directed papal Inquisitors against magicians and necromancers (Kieckhefer 191).
