This is a starting point for historical research into the great witch craze of 1100-1700 AD. And please, don't ask me for spells.

Spirits were believed to have inhabited elder trees, and for this reason, the tree was accociated with witches and bad luck (Huxley 2203).
As a Ward
If properly handled, it was believed an elder tree could protect and inable one "under certain circumstances to find out what witches were doing" (Huxley 2203).
