A Witch's Garden: Lettuce

Lettuce

Since the Middle Ages, lettuce (L. virosa) has been an ingredient in Witches' Ointments and the source of lactucarium or 'lettuce opium'. This 'opium' is obtained by drying the white sap contained in the stalk" (Rätsch 107).
