A Witch's Garden: Water LilyDisclaimerThis is NOT a page about Wiccans or neo-pagans, and I do not advocate the belief that Wiccans are Satan-worshippers and/or baby-killers. I am well aware that they are not. This is a starting point for historical research into the great witch craze of 1100-1700 AD. And please, don't ask me for spells. Water LilyKnown as the 'flower of chastity', the white water lily was a popular means for Medieval monks and nuns to suppress their 'devilish desires'. Strangely, however, the water lily was also used in love magic. For this purpose, the flower had to be plucked during a night of a full moon. The collector had to plug his ears, lest he be seduced by the bewitching songs of the water nixes and pulled into the depths. After he had obtained the flower, he wore it on his body as a love amulet (Rätsch 174). Lost?A Witch's Garden is copyright 1997-1998 to Shantell Powell. |
