The Burgomaster Werewolf of Anspach

[contemporary engraving of the werewolf of Anspach]

In 1685,...the inhabitants of Anspach [now Ansbach], Germany were terrorized by a wolf reported to have killed a number of women, children, and domestic animals. This creature was though to be a werewolf, the reincarnation of the town's detested Burgomaster who had recently died. After a long and difficult search by local hunters, the presumed werewolf was found, chased into a well, and killed. The townsmen then retrieved the wolf's carcass, dressed it in a flesh-colored suit, and adorned its head with a mask, wig, and beard, giving the dead beast the apppearance of the Burgomaster. They hung the creature from a gibbet, where it could be viewed publicly, and later put it on permanent display at a museum to prove that werewolves did indeed exist (Sidky 222, 223).
