Disclaimer

This is NOT a page about Wiccans or neo-pagans, and I do not advocate the belief that Wiccans are Satan-worshippers and/or baby-killers. I am well aware that they are not. This is a starting point for historical research into the great witch craze of 1100-1700 AD. And please, don't ask me for spells.

Marie Baten

On September 7, 1595, Marie Baten, also known as Mariken, was named as a witch by Jenneke Goessens, another accused witch. On September 10, Marie was arrested--the first to be arrested in Mierlo, Netherlands, for the crime of witchcraft. Marie herself requested the water ordeal, "as has been done in Geldrop, so as to stop people talking, she herself being sure, so she says, that she will sink" (Caspers 92).

Unfortunately, she did not sink.

She was burned at the stake within the month.
