Judt van DorrenDisclaimerThis is NOT a page about Wiccans or neo-pagans, and I do not advocate the belief that Wiccans are Satan-worshippers and/or baby-killers. I am well aware that they are not. This is a starting point for historical research into the great witch craze of 1100-1700 AD. And please, don't ask me for spells. Judt van DorrenOn September 21, 1595, Judt van Dorren was tried as a witch in the village of Mierlo, in Peelland, Netherlands. She was tested via the water ordeal and failed. Erasmus van Grevenbroeck, the lord of Mierlo, ordered her trial to be set. According to Grevenbroeck, Judt van Dorren conducted herself in a suspicious manner, which he deemed proof of her guilt: neither at the time of, or after her arrest and imprisonment, was she seen to cry or to make any sign of despondency, as women usually do, a strong presumption that she is guilty. Moreover, the prisoner showed in all her actions such gestures and expressions that one can clearly see that she is guilty (Caspers 93). By the end of September, Judt van Dorren was burned at the stake, and her property confiscated. Lost?Judt van Dorren is copyrighted to Shantell Powell. |
