Disclaimer

This is NOT a page about Wiccans or neo-pagans, and I do not advocate the belief that Wiccans are Satan-worshippers and/or baby-killers. I am well aware that they are not. This is a starting point for historical research into the great witch craze of 1100-1700 AD. And please, don't ask me for spells.

Francis Stewart Hepburn

Francis Stewart Hepburn was the cousin of King James I of England and was the Earl of Bothwell (Sidky 58). A Scottish noble of the 16th century, Hepburn was accused of being the "Grand Master of a sodality or coven of witches" in North Berwick (Wedeck 201).

Public opinon turned against Hepburn, and he "was eventually forced to fell the country in 1595. Many of [Hepburn's] alleged diabolical accomplices were burned alive at the King's insistence" (Sidky 58).
